My husband has taken such a path...
Retired in September, switched all our health coverage to the State Retirees plan, got some life insurance to replace that which went away with the state job, then this month got rehired part time.
Between the retirement pension, the part time paycheck and the fencing coaching he is doing more now he has more time, (his one true passion is and has always been fencing, since high school) we are doing about 25% better in the financial area than before he retired.
