Symphony . . , bump the lean cuisines and frozen promises!
This is what works for me:

1.  Low fatgram count per day.  Under 20 should be ideal for you.  I manage somehow to stay under 10.

2.  Stock up on fat free yogarts and sweet tarts.  Great fat free snacks!

3.  Chili is extremely low calorie and low fat.  Both varieties White Chili and Red Chili.  Count up the total fat grams in a pot.  It will feed you for a week, divide it out, it's nothing.  AND, you enjoy eating it!!

4.  MOST IMPORTANT - Rule - Once a week, if your weight decreases by 1 pound, you're allowed 1 offday.  During this day, you can eat whatever you want.  HOWEVER, Before you may reward yourself the next week with another offday, you MUST weigh in (using the same set of scales) 1 pound lower.  You'll find the reward off an offday is enough to keep you going for 6 days in a row.  It works.  I promise.

I love to stirfry!  And grill... Squash is so easy to microwave and we us olive oil and liberal shakes of tasty spices.  If you like shrimp, you can stirfry with celery, or broccoli;  I like meat so we often grill a chunk of it (thick chops, ch. breasts, fish, all brushed with EVOO, and steam some asparagus.  Sweet potatoe fries (baked in the oven); I lost weight on the core plan of Weight Watchers which lets you eat fruit and every healthy food.  The point is to stop eating when you are satisfied and not full!

Symphony- Moderation helps. Don't jump into it hard. If you do you'll
burn out to quickly. One of the biggest keys is the 'stick to it' plan. I feel you can make it.

Symph...
Portion control is just as important as what you eat. Exercise too of course. I find that if you eat grilled or baked as opposed to fried, lots of steamed veggies and then whole grain bread, you can do quite well for yourself. Fresh fruits for dessert's are great too (and snacks if you must have). I've lost over 100 pounds so believe it or not it can be done!

No problem!

I try to keep things simple but diverse.  I like to feed the family healthy stuff, but I'm not a big fan of slaving away over things in the kitchen.  :)

No, you can buy BBQ sauce that is low fat.  I don't think even the regular stuff is all that bad for you.  There is sugar in it, but since you are just brushing it on before you bake it much of the sugar will sort of bake off.  Just to give it a bit of flavor.  Better than butter or something like that.

Wow, RachelAnna ....Thank you so much!

Lots of things to remember, but great choices...I love chicken...I think I would prefer the fish with a hint of lemon on it (I must look around my shop for that)

BBq sauce on chicken sounds really nice.....are you sure it isn't fattening?....and yes a tuna casserole, I never thought of that....yum.

Thank you ever so much....everything sounds yum and easy to do......very much appreciated.

I try to eat a lot of salads

I change it up...chicken salad salad for dinner

or salad for dessert by adding almonds, grapes, and a raspberry dressing

Hmmm...

We do lots of fish and chicken.  I like fish and chicken because there are a lot of different things you can do with them.  Just remember not to fry them--bake or broil them to keep the fat content down.  They are both naturally low on fat, which is a good thing.

I have a really great lemon pepper seasoning (it's a store brand here so I know you can get it there, but probably something similar) that makes any fish taste wonderful.  Salmon and talapia are both great picks if you don't like really strong fish.

There are many different varieties of chicken to choose from.  We eat it a lot so I'm always buying just about anything I can find at the store.  Brush it with BBQ sauce or season it how you like it and bake it!

Since you like tuna you can do a tuna casserole which is generally quite simple and the kids will probably like it, too.

Since you're looking for fruit ideas...  how about pineapple?  I buy the canned stuff (which isn't as good for you with the syrup and all but it's like candy and still only 90 calories per serving).  It's great as a side with just about any meal, and my kids love it, which is a bonus.  Bananas are always convenient because there is basically no prep- just unpeel and eat.

If you're hungry you can always grab a couple pieces of lunch meat from the fridge real quick.  I make little roll ups for my girls with meat and cheese and then serve them with fruit and a piece of bread or tortilla and they are pleased with that.

I'll keep thinking for you.  There is lots of stuff that is healthy, simple to make, and fun to eat.  :)

Good Morning Symphony....I think you know that I am a nutritionist

and I will be more than happy to give you some information that I normally give to my clients. Give me a day or so and I will email you some information such as better food choices, replacements for the foods you enjoy, what foods to avoid and which ones to consume more of.  How does that sound?

posted by RckyMtnActivist on January 9, 2007 at 7:56 AM | link to this | reply

Just remember to keep drinking lots of water.  Water combined with the exercise you're doing will help you burn more calories, which in turn burns more fat.

I just received your email and will reply soon.  Keep up the good work, but remember to take things slowly at first.

Symph,
Things like stir fry dishes and some pasta dishes can be worked out to not only be filling and tasty, but low calorie as well. Stir fry is especially good because it largely consists of vegetables and a minimum of vegetable oil and small amounts of spices.

Keep things like potato crisps and cheetos and chocolate out of the house, but don't necessarily swear off them, or you will crave, then cave. As my grandfather was fond of saying, "Even a little arsenic won't hurt you."

Get rid of the snack foods....
Have plastic containers of fresh fruits and veggies...there's several new flavored spray  salad spritzers out now....spray on the veggies as you watch tv or blog.......

Thank you for your suggestion fionajean ...

I did not think of writing that - I wrote diets and was bombarded with lots of different diets - rather than the foods.....ok I will try that and see what comes up....

I have a problem with cooking foods that takes so long, or takes too much preparing, because being a single mother I don't get that sort of time to myself.....so I need quick and easy to do healthy foods...

anyway, shut up symphony....going to look now...
