The destruction perhaps wouldn't stop
until they come across something a lot hardier than them.

It is truly amazing what people get up to when they are paralytic with drink.  I often wonder whether they would act like that permanently if they were always drunk, or would they get fed up destroying things.

Dave,
I needed so much sleep to feel human again that anything alcoholic would have been detrimental to my recovery.

Jacenta,
This is definitely not my idea of a good time either!

Word, I hope you had a couple of jars yourself, to recover.

Seems with self control and inhibitions diminished or lost, chaos results. That is not my idea of having a good time.  Thanks for visiting me, word.smith.

Katray,
yep, very, very dangerous - both to the drinkers and innocent bystanders.

Insightful post Word.smith...many will think they truly celebrated and
enjoyed the holiday, even though they awaken with splitting heads and fuzzy memories...sad. And dangerous in so many ways.

Malcolm,
Inappropriate behaviour is inappropriate behaviour, no matter how you slice it.

Excellent point, Whacky!

Taps,
I suppose self-control or lack of it and potential addiction is the reason why some get drunk.

Jane, would that all of us restrained ourselves.

I have to say I often feel like this
about others' irresponsible behaviour but usually assume it's my own unwillingness or inability to socialise.

Seems like there is always someone blaming their bad behavior on the bottle
But it didn't pour itself down their throat!eh.

I do not enjoy being at parties or picnics where people are under the influence of alcohol.  I guess that I haven't much empath because I've never experienced being drunk.  A glass of wine with a nice meal is about my limit.

Oh my. This is probably one of the reasons why I do not drink more than
1-2 glasses of wine per day.  Potentially losing control of one's faculties and doing harm -- no thanks!

Presley, I can agree with that one...

Imagine a panicked brain scrambling around trying to concentrate 'what did I do? what did I do?' and the relief to find out there was no irreparable damage done...

Julia,
I think that must be the worst part, to wake up feeling slightly foolish, thinking you've done somthing silly, but what? With your brain cells scrambled all over the place, there's no telling how seriously bad you've behaved the night before. Thank you very much, but no, it's not for me either. The worst part is when people don't know they have a drinking problem.

Offbeats,
I'm sure you would have had your fill of silly and destructive behaviour in your time!

I don't get it either!  What's most frightening is when a person doesn't remember his or her actions the next day.  Yikes!

I have never understood the appeal of getting drunk. Yeah, I did it in high school a few times, but if you ask me, drunken fools are just about the worst type of person you could ever be around! They most likely would not remember their bad behavior either.

This is the reason I can not stand being around drunks..Thank God I was able to sell my pub when I did because my sanity would have been compromised. I have zero tolerance..You are very right, people don't know how to act especially in public..

Mia, you're one of the bright ones...
I pity those who get drunk, do stupid things and in spite of that, go right off and get drunk again and again.

I've now seen first hand what they can do.

I only got drunk once...and did embarrassing things....and learned from them. And now I vow to never get drunk and stupid. =)

Stupid is as drunk and stupid does... I can't stand drunks.

HG,
When you think about it, we spend a lot of time these days wondering if everybody has gone mad.  Earlier this year, someone got so carried away with an argument that he stabbed the other person in the head with his car key.  Luckily, it was not life threatening.  Who's to say what's going on with the youngsters these days?

Alf,
Many were in their early to mid twenties.  I suppose that many of them aren't responsible enough to remember how much they drink before they get happy and how much more before they become destructive.

Symphony,
No matter how good the crowd, there is always someone who goes over the limit when they get drunk and spoils the fun for everyone.

posted by word.smith on January 6, 2007 at 9:34 AM | link to this | reply

Unbelievable. Like Alf, I used to go out and get "crazy" when I was younger, but it was always good fun - silliness and laughing. Never destruction and drama. I just don't get it....

word.smith...
I have not been to any parties where people behaved THAT badly, what was the average age of the people in attendance?  For some reason it does seem to be a global culture to get drunk on New Years...I used to when I was younger but I was a friendly, happy drunk.  There are a few other such cultural events here in the states; St. Patricks day, 4th of July, and Halloween to name a few.

I like to have a drink and I do love a party...

but, there is always somebody that goes too far....those people scare me...cos you don't know what is coming next...

Like I said I love to drink and party...and I do get quite loud...I know how to enjoy myself....but, I would not do anything like that...well, maybe if I was a drunk teenager...LOL.
