Hey Rach!
I just realized you're back! I'm glad! xoxo

Wow! I made Ariel blush!!

I agree with Scoop, sort of...
I think it was called "the war to end all wars" little did they know.  Will there ever be a time when war is unknown?  Sadly, probably not.

I dunno...

That big freaking war?

Good question.

Oh, but one more thing, ariel70,
"Yanks?" I get enough of 'dat shit from Temple, my staff in Tampa, and my very own "Florida-Native" husband!! Is it the "ACCENT," or the actual "Yankee" term referring to Americans in general?

posted by SpitFire70 on January 7, 2007 at 5:20 AM | link to this | reply

ariel70, you make EXCELLENT points here!!!

And, I applaud you deeply and loudly.  I may have been born in 1970, but I truly appreciate, applaude, and celebrate ANY AND ALL vets. My dad was in the US Army, my husband a Navy Vet, and my Papa (my mom's mom...my grandpa whom I loved and adored) was a Chicago cop. Also, a very close friend of mine (female) is a cop in a very BAD city. I am NO ONE to turn their back on those whom protect and serve us. Just know that.

Thanks SO MUCH for your comments. It truly means VERY much to me and others' personally known to me and others whom are friends here within Blogitville.

Oops! Comma of course, not coma

Presley et al

This current war will be a mere coma in history.

Traumatic, and tragic as it is, it's scale is dwarfed by many previous wars.

Every life is precious, and one death diminishes us all ; but 3,000 American casualties? Compared to over 50,000 in Vietnam? Never mind the 26,000,000 Russian military and civilian casualties in WWII?

Sadly, but perhaps rightly, our grandchildren will hardly even be aware of the present Iraq war.

Do any of today's youngsters ... be honest ; do any of you know much about the Korean War of the 1950s? See what I mean?

Spitfire et al

Take my word for it ; up until the outbreak of WWII, the 1918 war was almost invariably known as the Great War.

This was Britain of course ; what you Yanks called it, I don't know.

Born in 1931, I never saw it referred to anywhere, nor ever heard anyone call it other than the Great War.

Of course, servicemen like my father, who had served in it referred to it simply as 'the war'

WWI is a stupid title anyway, 'cos the real First World War was the Naoleonic War(s), and I shall post a piece soon setting out why this is.

I see Whacky beat me to it in saying the Great War.  Like you, I wonder how this current war will go down in history.

HolyG,
Think you're also right. At the time, it would just be "the war." Wonder what we'll call the current one years from now. It's gotta be something more accurate than "the war on terror." Maybe it'll be "the Jackass Bush War."

posted by SpitFire70 on January 6, 2007 at 2:55 AM | link to this | reply

I agree, Alfy!
But still, they had no idea what the future would or could bring!! I think our current war should copy the name of the War to end all wars. Of course, this war doesn't look like any war that will actually ever end.

Bel, from what I'm hearing,
I think you're right. Still, I don't see what was so great about it. (kidding!)

posted by SpitFire70 on January 6, 2007 at 2:47 AM | link to this | reply

Hi Talion!!!
How are ya? Great to hear from you. Well, I think it was called the "first world war" (aka WWI) after WWII happened or begun cause how would they have known there would be a 2nd?

posted by SpitFire70 on January 6, 2007 at 2:46 AM | link to this | reply

Scoop, I think Whacky knows and agrees with you
on this one. But like I said to her, how did they know? Boy, if they only knew how "great" the future wars would be!!

posted by SpitFire70 on January 6, 2007 at 2:44 AM | link to this | reply

Whacky,
but how did they know how "great" it really was? What's to compare it to? hehe

posted by SpitFire70 on January 6, 2007 at 2:42 AM | link to this | reply

Oh well, I was going to say The Great War (which it's still sometimes called.) I guess probably during it most people just said "the war!"

Scoop is correct

posted by A_Norseman on January 5, 2007 at 8:26 PM | link to this | reply

I could be wrong on this but I think they called it the great war.

posted by bel_1965 on January 5, 2007 at 8:23 PM | link to this | reply

I'm no historian, but I thought it was simply the First World War.

posted by Talion on January 5, 2007 at 7:57 PM | link to this | reply

I'm not sure on this but I think once I heard it was called
the Great War or War to end all wars, I'm sure someone knows

posted by scoop on January 5, 2007 at 7:53 PM | link to this | reply

It was just the World War...sometimes the Great World War.
My grandpa was in it and had books about it.
