Here's what I think...

School / college is a system for achieving certification. The certificate means you have learned to jump through bureaucratic hoops in academia and can operate within perameters or rules in the corporate structure. A very high GPA indicates that when someone said jump, you asked how high. 

Students whose purpose is learning for its own sake also discover useful social things, getting along with people, what their own wants and needs are, what makes people tick (and tic). They don't worry about the GPA, will not put up with excess BS, and therefore the GPA is an indicator about the applicant's evolved status.

The guy looking for a 3.5 GPA is looking for a highly trained monkey. Chances are, he'll find one, at least until that certified candidate begins to learn.
