The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry, shows the true spirit of Christmas giving that you long for in your poem.  It is my all-time favorite Christmas story.

Marieclaire

Isn’t it strange – the disease of running about and buying presents (most of which fall flat) when all we really want is the love of a good friend, spouse, or a gentle, engaging hug?  Simplicity – there is a lessen there some where.

Thanks for the feedback, it really is helpful to know how words come across

Muser thanks, that is so kind, you make me laugh.

Jaswolf, I take your point, it is interesting to notice how I crossed that line in the first version, i see that now, thanks.

A little poem for you, Marie-Claire...an expression of my appreciation!
My dear Marie-Claire
your poetry's prolific
your words
chosen with care
make the meanings specific
and each one is terrific
amazing, honorific
sometimes nonspecific
not usually scientific
easily read
they're non-hieroglyphic
and your poems reflect one
whose manner is pacific
I find that your writing
is most readerific!

Marie-Claire, Some good lines here.
There's a fine line between humor and coming off as if you're just whining. As is often my suggestion to you, briefer is better. Just my opinion. I guess that I'd vote for the second one.

MarieClaire, I think we are on the same wave length today! I like them both
but the second one gets my vote.

Well. . .
no one wants socks or soap (except as ancillary goodies) from the ones they truly are empassioned about.  But everyone has many a dear relative who can only afford, and only imagine, giving a bit of their heart to you in a way "you really shouldn't have." I have big plans to learn to knit this year, and a love for colors of bright hue, so I might become just one of these dears that make the term "re-gift" so popular. Watch out

Great wit, in gift wrapped verse

Some excellent witticisms there, Marie-Claire. (Dig that rhyme!)
Socks is the male preserve, isn't it, and soap the female's. Hankies is another typical present for father. Personally, I'm relieved to just get people money or gift tokens. Makes my Christmas a lot easier, and theirs too. Do away with naff presents syndrome.

LOL, It just sounds so familiar.

um don't take this too personally,
any ressemblance by name or other wise are purely coincidental... well you know how it is at Christmas time
