Sunnybeach7 - considering that I don't believe hell exists, I wouldn't

think that anyone is going to end up there.

But I do feel as you do, in that the hypocrisy of donning a temporary and artificial Christmas spirit is pointless if it cannot be maintained to any degree for the remainder of the year.

majroj - something resembling Christmas may be necessary
The fact that we have factored it into our economy is however something that we can retreat from. A time will eventually come when we are forced to not waste as we do today.

Gome

Honestly, I find it quite hilarious, how some people have to be "nice" because it's Christmas.  What the Sam Hell does that prove?!
That they can't be nice any other time of the year, and that because of "Christmas" they have to act Christ like? Like a few days of being "good" out of 365, make a difference?

I think many will still end up in hell...what do you think?

Maybe Christmas is necessary?
It stirs the economy, it allows emotional catharsis, and all in a relatively legally controlled environment (versus, say, streetfighting or laying IED's).

SoloWriter - I agree with that, the holiday season is a reason for family

to come together.

When my children were small, providing them with the best Christmas that I possibly could was my main objective. The sheer joy of having small children in the house at Christmas obscured all of the things about the holiday that I object to today.

As a woman and a mother, I feel it is my solemn duty to keep Christmas enjoyable.  I can't promise that I'll be more cheerful for the entire month of December, but I can certainly keep in mind that it's a gift giving and decorating time, not a task or a burden. I do look forward to having the time to add special touches to other special occasions ~ time to entertain, time to gather with groups of similar interests and to contribute amongst circles of friends.  These things are part of our enjoyment of life.  Christmas is an opportunity, not a necessity.

Talion - I have to agree that the tensions manifesting themselves during

the Christmas Season are symptoms of a bigger problem.

and there is no easy solution to this other than individual initiatives to contribute less to it. The failing points are ingrained within our societies.

Shams-i-Heartsong - I always have the same question when a wholesale shift

in societal attitudes is proposed.

How do we accomplish this, or how do we make it happen?

The frenetic pace of the Christmas season certainly doesn't help matters, but when you think about it, people are like this all the time. It's a byproduct of the me, me, me, I'm special and you're not, I'm the center of the universe mentality that drives western culture. Many people simply can't adequately cope with the fact everybody else isn't operating on their schedule.
