In the grim work-a-day world, scrambling for the next
bit of coal for the grate, struggling to keep the clothes patched together and finding some odd bit of fun for the wee ones, the holiday feast was a merry contrast, when there was plenty of food for a change, a sweet or an orange, and secret, loving, hand-made gifts exchanged. And so to wish one a merry Christmas was a blessing of sorts.

hmmm...the internet probably has an answer to this--
"joyous Christmas" is more appropriate but just doesn't have that same ring to it. Or maybe, it's just that we are so used to Merry Christmas that everythinge else sounds funny.

There is a new phrase that I heard though...Merry Christmukah (sp?).
