This might make me sound ignorant or oblivious, but I never imagined that a teacher would give good grades for the sake of being popular.
I've witnessed teachers giving better than deserved grades to popular kids; the one's who get along with others and are generally gentle spirited but minimally attentive and not giving it their all. I've witnessed teachers give up on kids deemed "problem children"; the kids who have problems at home (be it economical or lack of parental guidance) that distract them from being able to function well in the classroom.
It's sad that so many children are lost in the mix of all this. I applaud you for recognizing that teaching isn't just about your basic "readin', writin', and arithm'etic'. Your a life coach!

Er .. yeah ... hang on ... Got it! If you've got no boots, pull yourself up by your toenails.
As for me, I left school at 14, with no qualifications, back in 1945, but I've got a lust for learning, so I reckon I'm so lucky. Always something new to learn. Even in here!!!! LOL

kingmi, superb post, my friend...
You cannot go through Life merely thinking that you are schooled and ready to provide assistance and healing proponents...to think of oneself as designed and proper for a position of treating any one of the countless vagaries of living to a healthy awayance in favour of paths flourishing with growth potential when in actuality the necessary scribes and applications have not been given a permanent harbouring in the mind, is folly which cannot be allowed to render itself upon the sectors of a populace in need...
"Physician, heal thyself..."...think about that. Unless you know absolutely what to do or say to promote a particular healing toward a given trial of your own Life, you are not ready to lend that same aid to aonther human being.
Know what you want to accomplish and become adept in that field, before you offer yourself to the world sector so desperately in need of that medium you feel in your Heart you have the knowledge to provide.
Regarding the others...treat them as equal minds yearning for common goals and let the students know that while you subscribe to policies and procedures adopted for a given arena, you at the same while are a sounding board for their confusions, frustrations; their voice regaling some small happiness which in the moment shines of a greatest light into a personal world unseen by the writers of the textbooks and society outside the classroom.
Be their guide, their instructor, their mentor.

Ciel, thanks. I've got ten good years, I think I'll tackle high
School in the.inner-city. Maybe we can get this thing turned around, and pass it on to other states being over-populated by under-educated immigrant families.

Kingmi, you once again hit the nail upon the head!
I always appreciate the way you strive to enfranchise the kids who could so easily slide off to the sides of mainstream society--Every child, every student who fails is a loss to the community in terms of their potential contribututions, and many will increase the troubles of the community for lack of anything better to do or be.
