Greed and sociopathy, OFFBEATS. Emotional detachment becomes a plus.
And it is far from normal...

That is the saddest thing I have read in a very long time. I will admit I do not have any concept or understanding of people who do these things.. How can anyone do this to another human being much less their own...

You are so very right on this subject, TAPS.

I could write a comment much longer than your post about this subject but I won't. I would just like to say that there are vast differences in the care of developmentally disabled people.  Some have the best care givers that they could possibly have and are challenged to be the happiest and best that they can be in every way.  They are fortunate.  Then, there are those who are neglected, starved, physically, mentally and emotionally abused, and live horrible lives.  This is another area in which we need to be observant, give praise and encouragement where it is due, and be quick to stand up for the rights of those we find being mistreated in any way.

I totally agree, bel, and it is a shame. I must admit that I allow the
daily press of so many things to distract me away from something this important.  I grew up in a house where my mother cared for my sister, who was 'developmentally disabled'.  My mother cared for her as if she would a baby, which, besides her actual years, she was.  I think, as a so-called 'progressive' society, we really need to take better care of our more helpless elements...

My childhood is many years behind me now, thank you for your kindness.  The system more than distrubs me and I agree for all the things that can and are being done in this country, there should be a way to step in and remove a child from a dangerous or harmful situation., yet nobody seems to really care enough until it makes the evening news.

I'm sorry to hear that, bel. I do hope that things have worked out since.
As for the social services system, it definitely needs to be revamped.  What kills me, bel, is that that jackass in the White House can order an invasion of privacy into the lives of every citizen in this country, but you can't get a social worker to do a routine follow-up on a complaint (or a series of them, which is far, far worse and damning).

It's very possible.  Our social services system is under huge scruntity right now because of the Ricky Holland case (a little boy who was killed by his adoptive mother) there had been complaints filed and one was stopped at the request of the abuser!

I grew up as a product of our social services/protective services and in the end all I could do to protect myself was to run away at age 16.

Ah, but bel, we are always overreacting until someone dies or a
43-pound woman is found in her own filth in an upstairs bedroom.  I know our social service system is strained, but how the hell does something that goes on for the amount of time it takes for these conditions to be present happen?  Was there no one who knew or suspected?  Do you think that maybe there have been calls, much like yours, that have gone into files, unverified and accumulating?

I have NO DOUBT  that mother was receiving gov't assistance.  The mentally ill are neglected, mistreated and flat out ignored here in Michigan until they do harm to themselves or others and then everyone looks around like a bunch of fools asking "How could this happen?"

We have a group home here that I have made calls numerous times about the abuse of the clients...each time they tell me that I am over reacting!
