- Go to Ohio Bans Public Smoking, New York Bans Transfats; Why Stop There?
Welcome, Kevin!
Interesting! If you're that aware of the hazards to others posed by smoking, then I take it you are making massive and unstoppable efforts to kick the habit?
My problems with the approach taken in Issue 5 are three-fold:
- The burdens placed on third parties, namely businesses whose clientele includes smokers;
- The deceptive language of the ballot, particuarly the misleading language about smoking being allowed in private clubs when the fine print defines provate clubs as organizations that have no employees, and allowing long-haul trucker's cabs to be termed offices where smoking is now verboten; and,
- The massive inconveniences placed on smokers who already are being conscientious towards those around them.
Of course, I have no problem with you or any other smoker voluntarily taking measures to keep your exhaust fumes out of the air intakes of those around you.

I, an Ohio voter, actually voted FOR the smoking ban as it exists...
It doesn't ban smoking entirely (after all, I am a smoker myself), but I believe that my right to smoke should never interfere with someone else's right not to inhale my second-hand smoke. Therefore, I believe smokers should smoke only by themselves or in the presence of other smokers. It is not only rude, but potentially fatal to smoke in the presence of nonsmokers.

Hopefully, Blanche . . .
. . . a long ways short of the satirical extremes I suggested.
