Hi Kasthu. The accomodation choices have been based on the basic criteria of cost and basic hygiene requirements (ie. not paying $200+ a night for a room with dubiously stained bed linen and surprise debris left from previous occupants... see various comments on Manhattan hotels on tripadvisor for more details). So I went for Staten Island because it offered a well reviewed, good room at a good rate ($80 a night) with a generous breakfast which kept me going for most of the day and a pleasant and honest owner). Given that I shouldn't complain too much.

Hi LLM. As it turned out the tour was a Chinese rather than Japanese event with a very limited commentary but I saw all the sights I wanted to see.

Yeah, I'd be eager to get away from Staten Island, too! Beats me why you decided to stay there. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Rob,

Enjoy the tour via bus.  Do you speak any Japanese?  Have a safe trip back to Oz and enjoy your last evening in New York.
