Advice someone gave me in my first creative writing class:
If you want to see if you can really write, go to work for a newspaper. There you will have to produce on deadline, every day. Not everything will be Hemingway or(insert your favorite writer here) but you will learn the skill. BTW Hemingway did write for a newspaper - I believe it was the Kansas City Star.
