I grew up this area, too, and once climbed Bear Mountain.
In Alaska there were so many moose and other animals being killed on highways, they built special underpasses for them with fencing to make sure they cross through there, and don't get onto the road.

Glad you were OK!
Sorry it spoiled your trip up to my old neck of the woods.  I grew up in Yorktown, not far from Anthony's Nose, which is across the bridge from Bear Mountain.  The only thing about hiking Bear Mountain is, you finally get to the top and there are all these cars that drove up.

Once you recover and have transpo, you should hike up Turkey Mountain in Yorktown, in the Yorktown Heights area.  Once you reach the top, you can see NYC on a clear day, but along the way there all these little rock groupings with mini-caves.

BTW, thanks for visiting my blog!

Sounds quite traumatic, poor deer, but what could be done?
You're lucky to come out ok, just as well your friend is a sensible driver, it'll probably make her even a little more cautious now (had a much more minor occurence myself which still impacts the way I drive).

Hope you both are on the way to getting over it.

I'm glad you weren't hurt.
My husband hit a deer and it came into his car through his windshield.  He wasn't hurt, but it ruined his car.  I feel bad for the deer. I wish they knew how to cross the road without getting hurt.  Take care
