i think smoke alarms are definitely needed
but they make them so hypersensitive now that every time i took a shower it went off - or turned the oven on.

Even in a house fire, the media people here in Chicagoland really are all over the smoke-alarm angle. It really is the first thing they mention. We had an apartment fire in Chicago a few months ago - the family had to use candles because they couldn't afford electricity, and a lit candle tipped over, lighting the apartment on fire. The media and the Chicago fire department swore up and down that the smoke alarms were not working, even though the landlord says they were. Any time a house fire occurs - not just an apartment fire, a house fire - the media always report that the smoke alarms were disabled.

mine went off all the time and that sound is so piercing
