Newt Gingrich...
riding the wave of the "Republican Revolution" in 1994, was not able to get his choice for Speaker of the House. He was saddled with Tom Delay instead. (and that worked out REAL well for the Republicans). He was, however, able to pass most of his "Contract with America" legislation and with Clinton's support, sweeping reforms in welfare. So he wasn't exactly "crippled" by the defeat.
Oh, BTW, HOyer won with 70% of the vote, a clear majority, while ol' "I wish Strom Thurmond was President" Trent Lott one by one vote , 25-24. Now that's a divided party!
