Gome
true. My comment may have sounded a little conspiracy theorish and overreaching, what I was trying to say is that this stuff bothers me because there is always some insideous motive behind it, and the people responsible, be it the church or the governemnt, are relying on people possessing a misinformed, fearfilled, or spoonfed gullible mind; or all three of course. And who is largely responsible for those things? Either the Church or the Government.
nevermind the fact that the image looks like the pious religious icon we are all accustemed to. Duh. You would think if She wanted to really materialize, it would be a little more original.

cantey_1975 - the reasons could be even more basic than distracting a
disgruntled populace.
The fact remains that we will never know who was responsible. Whether it was the Egyptian government or the church itself, it could have been perpetrated simply for money. The government wanting to establish a tourist industry after the 67 war with Israel, or the church wanting to make itself bigger, richer and more important (geez, that's never happened before?) . . in any event; the technology did in fact exist at the time but only a very limited number of people in the world knew of its existence. It is also no coincedence that the apparitions stopped about the time that the knowledge of the existence of the technology became much wider spread.

these kinds of deceptions
are so ridicules and they weed out the people who are religious for mental reasons. How can anyone believe that this holographic image is real? Back then maybe I could understand people being fooled but still, common sense says that it is obviously a manipulation to divert public consciousness or attention away from whatever the government doesn't want people to be paying attention to for whatever reason. Eygpt had recently become a republic by then right? Its a basic political tactic that politicians and the other powers that be utilize today in my country to keep people's minds away from
them and scrutinizing
them.

strat - yep, it seems that someone who hails from Egypt utilized the
technology first.

Xeno-x - though this apparition convinced millions, what else can it be
than an image projected via holographic imaging.
At the time no one had heard of such a thing.

,Dave. - the rising link thing is merely a javascript link rotator
Awhile back, I whipped up a page where the code can be picked up and with instructions as to how to install it (for those who need such help) . . . HERE
The script can be used for any number of things by changing a few variables. I used it for rotating blog titles: HERE

That's virgin on the ridiculous.
I'd say politics and tourism had a lot to do with fuelling what people saw. We never had icons on toast until Ebay, so maybe the laser's not a bad bet.
What's irreligious about it is that those that fuel such a collective vision have motives that are a million miles from any kind of spiritualism.
It's a mockery of those that believe that even a non-believer, such as myself, should be unhappy about.
[Ta for the link, by the way - checked it out earlier. Must learn how to do that rising thingy one day.]
