The Guild...Methinks they doth protest too much...and flail their chest in virtue at their reasons for joining...

The Guild

reminded me of The Writer's Guild as I saw it operating one evening.  However, when the rules, here, include that you can retain membership by just posting a "." to show that you had been counted by the BN network as a reader, this is where collusion occurs.  I have no faith in BN favorite rankings on account of this.  Also, my rankings stay pretty much the same until after I'm done posting and editing my piece.  Editing by going into and out of your piece (which is how I ended up doing it--it's just natural for me to do it that way, to look, mull, consider, edit, sleep on it, repeatedly) gets you to a certain rank and then the blog attains a certain stability as far as rankings are concerned.  If there are no new posts, then it drifts downward....

I had already accepted that so called "popular" blogs were ones where there was some "loud-mouthed" "Hooter" pounding his chest, making people angry enough to go to his site.  This was a learning experience for me, since BN provided a more-or-less real time statistical service with its rankings.  I learned that controversy is good, regarding "hits" on your blog.  "People you love to hate" phenomena such as the right-wing radio commentators of relatively recent years, etc.  It's all "a slice of life" and "to be expected" because we are human beings, most of us, anyway.  I felt guilty, though, wanting to join The Guild because I don't care for collusion, but "Catch 22" is all a part of humanity....

I was at No. 2!!!! Before the Guild came along...
Jealousy has a way of wanting to "mark its territory" with false accusations...

uhhhh
how can this be classified as a "conspiracy" when it was public knowledge and there was even a Blog explaining what the Guild was and openly invited people to join and write for further info? I somehow thought conspiracies weren't public knowledge. The Guild as it was defined in that letter never actually took place anyway... it was merely an idea.
The idea of the Guild was to use our already high rankings in order to help promote lesser known writers. We never needed the rankings we are already in the top ten.
The problem with this website though is once you are in the top ten it takes little to no effort to stay there, never giving lesser known bloggers a chance. I had to spend a lot of time posting and posting and posting to get in the top ten... Now I can seem to stay there with merely two posts a day... if I want to stay in the top five I need to spend a lot of time at it, but rankings really don't mean much to me anymore. They did initially so I could be heard... now I have readers and the top ten is pretty meaningless to me.
Instead of pointing fingers and complaining maybe you should try a little harder if rankings really mean that much to you.

My head hurts. People are so whiney.

Collusion?

Do you honestly think there is some sort of conspiracy among the top bloggers to stay at the top?  I can assure you that, if that's the case, I am completely unaware of it.  And, as someone with two blogs in the top ten, you'd think I would know about it...hum...interesting.  I've never promised to read anyone's blogs - I read what I find interesting, regardless of rank.  I believe that's what most bloggers do.

As to this Guild idea, like so many others, it will go no where.  Perhaps you don't recall, but about a month or two ago, another blogger started a little "clicks" club, where you were required to read each other's blogs every day.  That didn't last either.

I understand that the reasoning behind this little group (and others like it in the past) was to help promote blogs that were not highly ranked (people often complain about not being read, do they not?), and it was originally started because another blogger repeatedly threatened that s/he would "destroy" and "ruin" the blogging career of another.

Let's all get a grip, please.  If anyone is actually concerned about this effecting the PENNIES they earn here, then clearly the BN has become too large a part of that person's life.  Or are you planning on putting your blog ranking on your resume?

The Guild...
If you look at the top blogger{s} and the rapid rise of one of their blogs when newly posted, I don't think there can be any question that some form of collusion in voting is taking place. That is not a pretty picture.

Activity

Members value the credibility of the rankings on BN. If this activity affects the credibility of the rankings or of BN itself, then we will have to take action.

Strange

I had a strange sensation reading the long email; like I had been dropped on my head.

In any civilization, there are the greedy; those looking for an unfair advantage.  This little group fits the ticket perfectly. I want to be read, but not at the expense of other bloggers. As far as I'm concerned, management can give the money to charity.  That might stop some of this type of thing.
