Wiley, he ain't gone yet!
There's 2 more years where he can continue doing damage to our democracy and our economy. The dollar is tanking as the military is in tatters and our housing bubble has finally burst.

Parnell, I used to be very engaged with writing and politics
on Blogit, but then found some better writers, or rather more informed political commentary on some other sites, where I now do most of my writing. I keep my subscription here because it holds a huge archive of my posts, going back 4 years now...

Maj, Sometimes I get tangled up with your explanations,
but this was clear and well presented. I got it!
(Love the "slippery - oil annointed" line;-)

Cynthia, are you referring to the oil-annointed son of G.Bush the First?*
That is a delicate point, believe it or not...does protection and respect for the office extend to protection and respect for the office holder?
I was a "mustang" (enlisted guy who made into the officer corps) and turned down War College so I could retire, so my FORMAL understanding of this is limited to some degree. I can read, and I DID graduate Squadron Officer School by mail (your tax $$ at work), so:
1. I am sworn to report or thwart serious (versus factitous or facetious) threats to the sitting (or standing, etc) President.
2. I am sworn to uphold the Constitution (not the Dec of Independedence, which is non-binding).
3. If those conflict, a sitting president could be removed if so ordered by competent civlian command (e.g. Congress) if he/she were to subborn or invalidate the Constitution.
A case could be made that this one has ridden close to the line (i.e., habeus corpus issues and privacy..no, wait, no right to privacy, just security...), but Congress has not seen fit to try to impeach him and, thanks to whomever, the military has not tried to do something rash. If this were Russia or the Phillipines...different outcome, very bad.
Indirect answer to your question, if the American People decide to elect someone who has the morals of a grey squirrel and IQ to match, that's their right.
*Oil annointed...make him slippery, no?

As an officer I swore to uphold the Presidency...not the President.
A litle disrespect is needed, a lot sometimes.
