He May...
...have been insensitive, but what he says is based in fact.

The US military have been rapidly dumbing down their criteria for new recruits. Criminal records matter less than they once did. Education standards have been lowered. And that means the avergage level of education in Iraq is falling.

And you cannot deny that the actions of some in Abu Ghraib and elsewhere are those of nasty, dim-witted people.

AMVETS National Commander Demands an Apology:
AMVETS' National Commander expressed disbelief and disappointment in the comments by Senator John Kerry Monday.

“For the Senator to suggest that today’s United States military is made up of uneducated men and women who didn’t ‘study hard’ or ‘make an effort to be smart’ is ridiculous and appalling,” AMVETS National Commander Thomas C. McGriff said Tuesday. “The men and women in uniform today make up the most advanced, highly-educated force ever seen. To suggest otherwise is a slap in the face to every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine and Coast Guardsman who has spent countless hours working to better him or herself. This is also an insult to every person and organization who has worked tirelessly to provide our troops and their families with education benefits.

“Senator Kerry should retract his remarks and apologize immediately,” McGriff said after listening to comments made by Senator Kerry at a political rally in Pasadena, Calif., Monday. “It is especially outrageous coming from a member of the U.S. Senate.”

American Legion Commander demands apology:
The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated.

"As a constituent of Senator Kerry's I am disappointed. As leader of The American Legion, I am outraged," said National Commander Paul A. Morin. "A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapists and murderers. It wasn't true then and his warped view of today's heroes isn't true now."

While addressing a group of college students at a campaign rally in Pasadena, CA., Monday, Kerry suggested that they receive an education or "if you don't, you'll get stuck in Iraq."

"While The American Legion shares the senator's appreciation for education, the troops in Iraq represent the most sophisticated, technologically superior military that the world has ever seen," Morin said. "I think there is a thing or two that they could teach most college professors and campus elitists about the way the world works.

"And while we are on the topic of education, why doesn't the senator and his comrades in Congress improve the GI Bill so all of today's military members - reserves and guard included - can achieve the educational aspirations that the senator so highly values?" Morin said. "The senator's false and outrageous attack was over-the-top and he should apologize now."

I too fully agree with McCain that Kerry's remarks were 'insensitive, ill-considered and uninformed', and I would add 'highly insulting', although he had expressed that earlier in a slightly different way.

But I am also surprised at some of the comments. What's all this stuff about the First Amandment? Nobody is suggesting that Kerry be dragged into court, which is the only place where that would be an issue. The only 'court' that's relevant here is the court of public opinion, and that's where he's losing big time, and so he should!

Nor do I understand the statement that 'Their country [Iraq] is entirely based upon moral principles'. Even if that were meant facetiously, it has nothing to do with the issue at hand, though I doubt it. But I don't get it either. Maybe someone who is smarter can explain that one to me...

I read your post and comments. When will the world understand there are some things, and some ways you do not treat people regardless of the first amendment; that is if you are civilized at all. It was not created so people could walk up to others and be an absolute verbal monsters. It was created so one could express their opinion. It does not give one the right to act like a complete unsocial cad without any respect or sensibilities. I was amazed that people did not see these crude characteristics in this man when he ran for president.

It is a very dumb statement
and if Bush said it I am sure myself and others would be all over him, but as I said in my post I would like to see the clip before and after he said it, so see how the statement fits in to the speech. No matter what as Ricky said to Lucy, "You got some splainin to do!"

Corbin, that's a different question and I agree with that.

If Kerry wants to win votes, he shouldn't be talking bad about the military.  He switches back and forth so much that I don't see how anyone can take him seriously.  If he runs again, the military will be his best friend and he their most ardent supporter.

He's a complete joke.

Actually, Success
So the first amendment depends on whether or not someone is dying?

The first amendment is a direct result of men dying and continuing to die........even  the ones dying in Iraq.

Success

Yes, he is entitled to his opinion......however, seeing that he is a Senator...and a former candidate for president......doesn't he have just an inkling of consideration due to the troops he so strongly claimed to be a "brother" to when he was seeking office....

As a public figure he can have any opinion he wants.....he must also be prepared to reap the results of those comments.....

Thank you John Kerry..you just gave us a House seat or two......I am sure the DNC is im emergency mode now trying to repair the damage.......

Have I missed something somewhere?

btw, I have heard that recruiters focus their efforts on poor people with fewer options.  If that's true, does that have an effect on what he said?

There a couple of things that I have told to numerous people.  One is, "It's not slander if it's true."  The other is, "If you don't like how your actions make you look, change your actions."  Some people get upset when the truth is exposed, that's not the fault of the people doing the exposing.

Yes, Success, he is entitled to say what he wants, but not while
our soldiers are dying ona daily basis in Iraq!

I'm sorry, but I just can't see what America has to offer Iraq.  Their country is entirely based upon moral principles.

It may have been incosiderate but
isn't he allowed to say what he wants without apology?  Or does the first amendment only apply when you are saying nice things about people?
