Spitfire, I think there are so big they just don't worry about it
Maybe DirectTV is saying the same thing so everyone is swapping from one to the other to get the free DVR.

strickgold, my wife does most of our calls and she has said the same thing
These companies are outsourcing to people who try to read cue cards.

SuccessW,
IMO, I would've canceled service with them, but then again, it's obvious they don't care about customer satisfaction anyway. That is just bad business. I've had a few complaints to the animal hospital throughout the years and as the manager, I tried to resolve the matter as best as I can, not just blow them off because I have plenty of other clients to keep me in business!  Even if someone complained about something I thought was petty or frivilous, I still treated it professionally and with courtesy.

There is no such thing as customer service anymore
One of the reasons for this is that these large coprporations have customer service rpresentatives in other countries such as At&T who has customer service reps in India that answer the phones.  These people dont care.  I ran across that recently myself with AT&T and after 8 months finally got them to credit me for charges that I should have never had because some idiot did not type the right information into the computer when we moved.

Pat, it's a good point but I may just switch over to DirectTV

My wife was the one that made the call and I haven't sent the letter.  It's going to be an email that takes about 5 minutes when I do send it.

The bottom line is that I don't care if I have a DVR.  For my wife, it's in the realm of, "that would be nice."  If we don't have one, life will somehow manage to continue for us.

If we had a DVR, I might actually watch TV a bit

No promises but it would be more likely than now.  Most TV shows look incredibly stupid but on top of that, commercials are a complete waste of time and I refuse to watch them.

A friend of mine brought over X-men 3 for me to see the other day.  He hooks me up with movies every once in a while.  People thinks it's strange that I don't watch TV or movies and so they try to "help" me. =)

TVBlogger, easily sidetracked is the answer
I think I know what I'm going to write about the next day but by the time the next gets here, I have something new I want to add.

This free DVD is costing you too much...
If you put a value on your time an energy--for the sake of the argument, let's assume you earn $20 an hour--and you spent half an hour talking with the folks about why you can't have a free DVD player, you've put out $10. Then you write a letter for their files (or an email). That takes another half hour, another $10. So you've already invested $20 in not getting a free DVD. If you'd go an electronics dealer, especially when they've got a sale going, you could get a pretty good DVD player for $25-$50. And you wouldn't feel frustrated and ticked off when the deal was done. So if you really want one, why not take the $20 you didn't pay to not get a free player and put it toward the satisfaction of ownership? :)

DVRs - TV the way it was meant to be
I love mine.  Your wife will love it.  Now, I know you don't want to switch, but I'm a DirecTV customer and I have never had a single complaint about anything they've done.  Then again, I've not tried to get a free DVR out of them.  Did you ask for a supervisor?  Sometimes they can do things the phone rep can't.  Anyway, if you do want to swtich, my experience with DirecTV has been fantastic.  Once you have DVR, you'll wonder how you ever lived without.  Okay, maybe you won't, but your wife will.
