I don't think many people reach their ideal true self
At least not for long periods of time.

I have to disagree with your last statement. There are a few, a very few, people who I believe have reached their true self and still occupy this particular reality. It is rare, but it does happen.

religion as an institution cannot
religion as religion cannot
and yet, religion as teachings can enlighten the individual to such an extent that the life can change with the individual's will so to do.
and many are living, practicing such teachings without religion.

Religion muddies the water; individual choice either blesses it or pees in it. And that choice is made based on who is in control - Ego or the true self.
