I don't like eating in the public, period.
I hate smelling like food afterwards... just imagine what if some really hungry hobo smelt me, and ate me...

embarassing moments
When I was sixteen I was at a dinner after playing in a sport event. The table was set up boy/girl with one guy (very, very cute) at the head of the table. I was to his right.
As the waitress was serving roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy and peas to him, I was fiddling with my silverware, bumped her elbow and she dumped the whole plate onto his lap!

What I do is nibble on cheese&crackers& raw veggies and sip a glass ofwine
while I get ready for any public dining experience.

That's not surprising, Symphony, I feel that way, too, at times
I'm not sure exactly whether it bothers you for the same reasons I am sometimes acutely aware (hypervigilant) about eating in public, particularly in front of men, but I would probably bet that there are at least a couple of reasons.
One, for me, is that I get cliumsy when I feel self-conscious and spill. So, I have to be so aware not to drop something or spill, especially onto good clothes, and red wine stains terribly. Since you said it started when you were a teenager, there's probably another reason as well, when you hit puberty is when its impossible not be self-conscious of being under scrutiny by the opposite sex, for a variety of reasosn, and not wanting to look stupid or clumsy is one.
The other thing is that when straight (heteroseual) men are watching a woman eat, you can almost wheels turning and all kinds of obvious connections being made. I don't think I need to spell it out anymore than that. I sometimes even cover my mouth with a napkin, if I'm feeling really scrutinized. Just don't order any hot dogs or banana splits, and you should be fine.

It will be okay.
Just sit up close to the table and don't slurp the spaghetti. You can bet everybody else at the table is just as shy as you are, and feels just as self-conscious about sitting there in their best clothes with everybody looking at them. Have fun! This moment may not come around again for a while...

How funny you should say this. I had been thinking about doing a post the other day how when I was in high school, I couldn't eat my lunch a whole year, because there was this guy at another table who always seemed to be watching me, and I didn't want him to see me eat. I was so paranoid. Hahaha

Lol...No, you're not the only one who doesn't like eating in front of men, Love. I HATE eating in front of men!! Ironically though, I don't really care for eating in front of women, either. Unless I know them really well.
