Aha! So that's it, my dear Watson! When we used to holiday in Crete we used to drink a very sweet, very potent Greek wine called Mavrodaphne.

That phrase from Homer " the wine dark sea" translated from mavro thalassa?

Am I Greek?

No is the short answer. I have spent a lot of time in Greece over the years and while working on The Mani peninsular many years ago I acquired this nickname, which is derived from a historical figure Mavro Michaelis (black Michael) who ruled the region a few hundred years ago.
