Kid, that brings us back to the original question
Do you need a religion to teach you those things?

This is one of those posts that has given me a great deal of food for thought. The best answer I can give to the question you pose, about why an adherent like me might belong to a religion, is that it makes me a part of something larger than myself. Although Eastern and Western religions do differ strongly in most areas, they are similar in their ethical precepts - the principles of behavior they teach adherents, such as moderation in all things, appropriate self-denial (as opposed to self-obsession or an inflated sense of self-esteem), and so forth.

That's the thing. Religion can't be allowed to rule people
especially those not in that religion

easy

every religion has precepts that all can agree on as true and eternal.

the golden rule is part of over a dozen religions.

people can believe in their religion, then apply the golden rule.  they can use this as a way to mold their lives.  a lot of the chaff can be either ignored, or, in the case of many adherents, adhered to as they believe -- this is important.

recognizing the extreme faith of adherents to a philosophy with which you don't necessarily agree, or even entirely disagree, is part of a healthy society.

but, adhering to the faith, and expecting others to deny theirs because you believe yours to be the sole truth, thwarts your own faith.

There are a lot of people that don't hold true to live and let live

Sharing is one thing, but trying force others to believe as we do is
not sharing! Live and let live has a lot to do with being true to our own beliefs and that is where too many of us fall off the tracks. Keep writing,  faholo
