Hey Symphony! sorry I haven't been around.....anyway..
I'm Italian on my mom's side and Polish on my Dad's. I didn't know my Dad growing up, so I know more about the Italians. I wish I would have kept a journal of some of the stories I have heard...many of them I have forgotten.

I don't know much about my background either, but
my great great grand mother is still alive, she probably knows all about it. Too bad, though, she lives very very far away, plus, I kind of can't understand her talk.

I guess I was lucky that certain branches of my family started doing genealogy a century before it was trendy. Scandinavians of mostly humble origins but a few royal connections which were largely ridiculed. Some secrets and skeletons in the closet, too. I think if we trace back far enough, we are all related.

Your background does not make you who you are
I have not done it myself but I do know people who have had success in tracing their ancestry on the internet. They found it totally absorbing, and time consuming!

Searching out your family history
can be addictive and time consuming -- it's detective work with the devil in the details, and clues that confuse. It's discovering you're not the oddest twig on the family tree. Ancestry.com is one online resource, but there are many others. Many LDS churches have huge files, including census records, etc., that are open to non-members. If you really want to do this, contact your cousins - host a big family potluck and put out a few old photos to get them talking, have the tape recorder going. It will amaze and delight you.

Those are mischevious eyes Symph!
There must be somewhere you can find out about your heritage...must be frustrating and having a sister you don't know? Do you know anything about her? My father's family was from Perth, Scotland and I got to finally visit there last year. It felt very cool walking the same streets they did. My mother's family is Irish in origin so I'm a Brit from way back! My surname (I kept my maiden name) is Irish although I consider myself more of a Scot.

I've got a million relatives, all within about an hour's drive from here.
My mother's family and father's family have about five or six different branches, and I know at least one common ancestor came here in the late 1600s/early 1700s. He was a Hugenot minister and founded a number of churches in the lowcountry.
As my cousin, who traced all this stuff, once said, "The world was a mighty small place on horseback."
Places to look for info, Symph, are things like county courthouses and archives, as well as old family letters and documents. An especially good source can be old family bibles -- because back in the day generally everyone listed their children's birthdates in them, among other things. Also, older relatives are good sources, and it's important to talk to them before they pass on.
Good luck on your search, should you decide to get into it!

cute pictures
my father was german - his father was born in germany. he was a bit of a nazi and believed that hitler was right. my mother's family was a mixture of eastern european and welsh, and they were jewish. my grandfather apparently did not come to the wedding because my mother was marrying a german carpenter - which he felt was below her. family get-togethers were always pretty humorous. the german side were all tall and serious / then the jewish side were a bit shorter and always laughing. but my dad and the uncles always got into "the debate" about the holocaust and that was when us kids were shuffled out of the room.
that's my history - don't anyone get offended because that's just the way it was.
I am an American. Plain and Simple.
