I
always thought,(and I could be wrong),that an atheist had no beliefs in any form of deity. They follow only science.

Dylan
A lot of what comes into play with my post is just what is God or gods.  As far as I can see even most believers really have a hard time explaining that, because it often seems that they each have their own idea of God that has a good chance of not actually agreeing with everyone else's.  I do not believe in God or gods, yet my beliefs about how the universe is might been seen as belief that the universe is God, such as my father believes.

So of course we are suddenly left with the simple fact that since you really cannot define God we are all atheists and we are all believers just because there is no solid concepts of just what is and is not God or gods.

Here are some definitions as I understand them.

Correct me if I am wrong.

A theist believes in God, or gods.

An agnostic doubts the existence of God or gods but does not rule out the possibility; or does not know whether God or gods exist.

An atheist believes there is no God or that there are no gods.

I think a lot of agnostics are mistaken for atheists. To be an atheist -- that is, to be distinct from an agnostic -- you must actually believe that there are no gods.

actually you, son, like me, are not an atheist
so much as you don't believe in an idol, which is what the Christian god is.
