Columbus

My kids went to an elite private school, and for whatever reason the Columbus day thing was a huge thing.  Each year we went through the same thing.  In the carpool line on the way in, we'd have the talk about the reality of it all---Ericson and the like.

I'm not as harsh on it all as you are, but I'm not a harsh person.  Here's the way I found to shut people up, including the kids.  People were already living in the spots Columbus discovered which no one debates.  The immediate comeback is that he discovered it for the civilized world.  Ugh.  Okay, there's no poing in fighting with someone lets something like that come out of their lips, in my opinion.  Still there's a way to counter it that just leaves them speechless.

I drive to Wyoming one day.  I've NEVER been to Wyomong.  So, it's new to me and my family.  I certainly discovered it in the literal sense of the word, never mind the people already living there.   So, should I be putting up a flag and getting put in history books because I hadn't found it up until then.  Can you imagine doing that in NYC in from the say, MOMA?  What a riot.  I think it puts it in perspective as to how ludicrous the concept is.

This takes all of those larger issues out if, and leaves it at a place most people can't argue with. You just can't get mad at my statement. It is what it is. I have American Indian friends, so that takes it to another level.  Most of the people who will argue this stuff are prepared to hunt bear, so it gets pretty heated, and for no good reason, in my opinion.  Most people who get into these knock down/drag out fight already have major opinions you won't be changing.
