JanesOpinions, GOOD 4 U for standing your ground!!
What's in a name anyway? It's what is BEHIND the name that matters!

Good post/observations!
In grad school I was told that my name would look better, more respectable (or some such drivel) if I either added my middle initial, or if I used my first name initial, full middle name and last name (i.e. J. Louise Doe). Huh? Got a problem with my first name?
Tuff cookies.

Yeh,
I've always wondered if Sarah Jessica Parker's friends actually call her Sarah Jessica. She doesn't look like a Sarah, but I guess she must be.
Just this morning on the subs desk of my magazine they were having a debate about P Diddy. Who has by far taken studid names to the extreme. First we had to check because apparently now he is just called Diddy. The sub-editor then wrote it as 'Diddy' with quote marks, which we then decided we had to remove for fear of being sued if Diddy was offended by the quote marks.
This led me to think quote marks in your name could be quite cool - and no less ridiculous that being called P Diddy (sorry, Diddy) or J-Lo. So now I'm gonna be called 'Jenny'. I'm about to write an email to HR to see if they can change my email address.
Nice meeting you Spitfire.

Or Jay Z, what the hell is the Z for.. just for it to sound cool?
Some people I think feel embarrased of their real names, especially celebs, that is why they change them or add a middle name. When you find out their real names, it is really shocking.

You're right, Blanche!
Maybe there just weren't enough celebs names Will Smith out there at the time! (?)

Hahahahaha!!!
Actually, these last few remind me of the old joke about how the lost tribe named their children after the first thing their parents saw after the child was born. "...And that's how you got your name, Two Dogs Screwing..."

Spitfire, maybe some celebs add an initial to a really common name
like "Smith" although I wonder why Will Smith didn't cause you can't get much more common a name than that.

I hear ya, Whacky, but
certain stage names are necessary. Like, if one's name was somethin' like Alfred Zooglenoff, yeah, a change is in need!

Ya really think so, Kooka?
Ego? Well, I suppose. But what about the ones using their real names?

Great to hear from ya. Haven't seen you around much. Hope you're doing well!

I think some people changed their name
or added an initial because there was already someone with their name in the Screen actor's Guild. Sometimes it is just a good idea...don't think I would watch a picture with Archebald Leach but Cary Grant oh yeah.

From what I understand
Michael J. Fox did it because there was a Michael Fox out there already. And that is often the reason for those who do not wish to change their names.
As for using just one name or stage names, I guess it is all ego.
