Go to I WRITE, THEREFORE I AM
- Add a comment
- Go to Two things I'd love to see on Blogit, but probably never will
I agree - I was going through my people list on
Tuesday and was surprised at how many had left. I admit that I have also been remiss in not visiting as much as I'd like but still, it was rather a shock. I agree, it does seem that new bloggers are the first to go.
On another note, I saw you discussing AC with Ariala. Would you give that web address - I also write part time for extra bucks. By the way, have you ever tried www.constant-content.com ?

I think Symphony posts new bloggers but your right, unless the blogger writes a post about leaving no one knows until after they are long gone!! Glad your feeling better..

two things to see on blogit
My guess is they were looking for their 15 minutes of fame and its hard to get past the cliques in Blogit so they left if they weren't being read.

Julia,
You're a writer, so the writing thing doesn't throw you. Many people fancy themselves writers, as I think we've talked about. I think they have expectations for themselves here when they joint that don't pan out. Not that they can't be good, but they find they really don't have it in them to take the time. There's no substitution for putting your behind in a chair and doing it. I think it's one of the reasons the crazy fights break out. It sidetracks people from doing real writing.
So many people have it in their minds that they want to do that great American novel. I've never had an urge to do that, so I don't have any great expectations of places. I'm working on a book, but it came about only because I got sick, and I wanted self-imposed deadlines. I would have led a happy, fulfilled writing life without the book series.
I came here with a specific intent, and that's working out for me. The other side relationships are just bonus points. If a newbie is looking at Blogit as a way to sharpen his writing, my gut is he'll get disappointed because there are too many newbies and people who want to publish and not enough to guide them along. That's what I've seen in other writing groups. The same handful writes again and again. The newbies float in and out.
I may be really off base with this, but that's always been how I see it. There's that old saying---if you can be talked out of doing it (writing, acting, singing, etc.) you should be talked out of it. If someone gets ruffled by the likes of Blogit, the real writing world will scare the crud out of him. If a newbie here makes a point to seek out the people who can teach him, people who make good suggestions for him as a writer, I think it would go a long way to keeping people here.

I am new here
Some people just give up too easily. I see myself as a longtime Blogitter, (or whatever the term is). That way I will get to know other regular bloggers and long term members, and can build a favorites list and blog list. It should be a good experience.

I think there is a honeymoon period here, just as in a marriage. It seems to be the greatest thing, then all of a sudden, reality hits. You can write like nobody's business; but, until you work to expose yourself in a courteous way, no one will read it.
To me, it's a lesson in karma. You'll be treated how you treat people. So, if anyone on here doesn't like what's happening, I'd advise him to take a look at what has been contributed.

Julia., I'd love to see some honest answers to see these questions, but
unfortunately, I don't think that's likely. I think it's a combinaton of not getting noticed right away (we're here chatting away to the "old favorites", maybe feeling left out, and some have voiced some disgust with the "chat room atmospherre", before leaving, but, hey, imho, that's what makes Blogit unique and fun.
I'd love to get some real answers from new people on their impressions here, but I don't think that's going to happen for a couple of reasons. One, it's intimidating to be the "new kid on the block" in any group, and either thinking "I hate this, I'm out of here" or "I'd like to fit in, but I don't know how, and I'm nervous" doesn't lend itself to voicing one's opinions strongly. If they hate it here, for a variety of reasons we are all too familiar with, they'll most likely just vote with their feet, as you've noticed (and I've noticed) as well.
Two, I have a very strong hunch that if any new person did say exactly what they thought of the site, retribution would be swift and fierce, from the usual quarters.

..it's hard to maintain focus and direction... especially if you don't know
where your're going. I see this place as one of those avenues of self expression... and as any busy avenue there are those regulars in the nieghborhood... and those that hang out for awhile and then just pass on through... for whatever reason....

Julia.
This place is a gold mine, not for us, but for the Blogit powers-that-be. They get 50% of the subscription fees while we share miniscule slices of half of these pies. As long as the regulars stay and new "suckers" are lured in with the promise of fortune and fame, I doubt they care who leaves.

The 'exit poll' is a good idea. Maybe a 'why do you stay?' poll too for
us lifers. I'd love to get this site to expand and sometimes wonder if it is or not. I'm sure there used to be a higher regularity of stats and stuff from our flowers-that-be.

I often wonder why I continue around here. I realize because it's a good outlet. And now that I've been around awhile, being a 2nd tier fixture ain't such a bad thing...
