Our parish's former pastor got caught with his hand in the till during a routine audit of parish books. He had two secret checking accounts, and loads of cash tucked away in a secret safe nobody knew about until the routine audit was done. (The Archdiocese of Chicago requires that a parish undergo a routine audit of parish books every time a new pastor comes on deck. That's how the accounting "irregularities" were discovered.)

Faholo, I'm probably going to have to do a whole post
to address your comment.  I appreciate your thoughts though because they make me think.  Thinking is good.

I rarely respond to stories such as these, but
this time, I will. The biggest problem with priests is God made them human with all the weaknesses and tendency to sin we all bear. I can only say that I have worked in seven different dioceses and was never lucky or maybe unlucky enough to meet a priest as rich as these men. I know many priests, some have money because their families have money, some are poorer than I am and some are what could be classified as middle class. Knowing the real monthly salary of many priests, I wonder how they even buy their clothes and keep gas in their cars today. But, you know what? As long as they are honest, hardworking and committed to the promises they made to God, I could care less about their money. Only their spiritual life is important to me and I can pick them out within the first two minutes of a homily. Those who live what they preach get my support and those who do not are left in God's hands as were the priests you described. We have to pay our debts of sinfulness, sooner or later as they now know! I will pray for the them, but I sure won't support them or approve of their dishonesty. Their wrongdoing is not because they are priests, but rather because they are men! Keep writing and challenging us and I will stop back again when I need some brain exercises! God bless,  faholo

I wonder if the lover will still be there for him
when he's not a priest and not bringing in $200k.

Sunny, there is no honor amongst thieves.
Hopefully they put away some money in accounts that the cops haven't found yet to use for their defense or for their flight to avoid prosecution.
