Public school has been likened to prison, a social burden, camareye.
Children tend to reflect the ideas of their parents, who, generally, did not respect the institution or what it was designed for.  And your style of education may be what's needed.  It certainly would not hurt to try...

Tragedy at school

Well I agree we need to do something now about our school system. Even if the shooter was not a student -today in Colorado, there is great unrest in schools across the entire country.

I think public schools could be better run by private consulting groups - curriculum selected - teachers qualified- classes reduced in size and uniforms.. morning assembly -  entire school projects - everyone important and told they are important - place that responsibility  upon each student,  prizes offered for great students..teachers who are allowed to have control of the class room by contract and agreement signed by each parent and or student.  Now that sounds tough, but it may just be what we need.

Discipline and self denial and sacrifice are three things not allowed to be taught, most parents don';t know what that means anyway.  Parenting skills need to be taught in H.S. (some do teach them.)

Reality Check tells me that the above will not happen over night and maybe never, but such discipline is needed - respect for the opportunity to learn needs to be developed in the young child.  We have it so easy in this country.  You just show up at the door, with a lunch or a pencil and enter the world of education as if it were your natural born right..well.. that right cost the tax payer great money, concern and has been a developing process for many years...HEY OUR KIDS DON'T KNOW THAT.   I THINK THEY MAY .BELIEVE THAT  SCHOOL IS A BAD PLACE TO BE.  I guess!

And that is at the core of all of these acts, Moxie Maven: Why? There
are as many answers to that question as there are these types of acts.  They all have their reasons, some only understandable to the perpetrators.

It just makes me ask, Why?
What was to be gained, knowing that he would most likely do himself in at the end? Why take and torture and kill knowing you are killing yourself? Why?
