Part of the problem...
I'm convinced that a part of the problem is that in pediatric dentistry in particular, parental involvement is discouraged. As I said, that stems partially from legal liability - the dentist may be afraid of a lawsuit. Also, there is an attitude I've discovered is common - the attitude that "they just won't understand." In other words, laypeople without medical training (or without much training) are seen as not having enough information to understand the procedures doctors and dentists perform on patients; if they do, some professionals (not all, but some) see that specific group of highly informed patients as being overeducated, as in, "They don't trust us, but we have the training, and I wish they'd just butt out and let us do our thing."

I heard from a reliable source
that the third or 4th leading cause of death these days is medical mistakes. I found it very hard to believe until I began talking to people and thinking about my own experiences, a tendency for medics to move too quickly and bypass vital info on the patient's chart, etc. I hope the little girl recovers, and the news of this event will spur mothers to insist on their rights. Have they forgotten the big doctor's oath, "first, do no harm"?

What a quack.
Really, the mom should not have allowed him to give more than one sedative though if she had medical training!? I suppose she figured he has the training and she doesn't, but really people have to go with common sense when it comes to their own kids or themselves...
