Actually, Bukowski represents
only one facet of the spirit of America, himself.  I have become seriously disaffected with the spirit of America (the truth) as the spinning veils of myth drift away and reveal a hard, bitter heart.  Changed my mind.  You nailed it.

Freemanwalking, I haven't seen Factotum yet, but I plan to.

I've read a few short stories of Charles Bukowski and I like his style and his persona.  I think you're right, too many people have tried to reform an abusive drunk, and failed, only to be dragged down with him. It's an old, sad trap that a lot of women have fallen into. The sad thing is that he did have genius, but couldn't overcome his inner demons, and that inner voice his abusive father screamed into him.

He bought into it, and it ruined him, kept him a prisoner, and killed his love. There is nothing sadder than that.  Ultimately, some get free of that, but only if they do a lot of soul-searching, and imho, find God, because the darkness gets too deep otherwise, and in that deep well of dark self-loathing iinstilled by the primal parental figure, only the light of God can reach.  Okay, that's my pontificating for the day.
