i think Israelite monotheism
just might have arisen from Egyptian -- Aten (?) the sun god, who was the only god allowed under Akenaten -- got him in trouble and a few of his relatives taken out.

lots of parallels in many religions, particularly those to whom the sun is prominent.

I was thinking more of studying it academically
Taking theology classes at a university or some such structured learning.  I enjoy what I'm learning now just with my hit and miss tactics but I think the two would work well together.

SuccessWarrior - I have found that any real study of religion begins

outside of religion and is complimented with world travel.

It is a fact that you cannot trust a word that religious folks say about religion if an individual wants to learn anything but one version.

sannhet - the other conclusion is that God himself implanted

these thoughts into the minds of all members of our species.

....except this conclusion is in direct contrast to the position of the church of Rome, 500 or so years ago where they held that Satan put these thoughts in place. Of course with their tutalege and all of the gold they could lay their hands on, they were happy to correct the erroneous versions that the natives were proliferating.

And continues because of ignorance, chosen ignorance.
I plan on studying religion more in the future but from what I have read and from your blog, I would guess that a great many religions place high emphasis on the Sun.

Gome -
While I'm with you on the similarities of various ancient peoples, I draw a different conclusion, as you probably know.
