He may have. He has so many people to speak for him, ya know...he NEVER has to speak for himself.

Well if god said it, it must be true.

Sunny, we don't need science, nutrition, and clean water.
We just need to pray harder and become more faithful and all of the world's problems will be solved by god.  Anyone who has problems after that is a sinner and should burn in hell.

Gome, I have wondered the same thing
I lived in Utah for about 20 years and I think some of the people that stay Mormon do so just because of the pressure they would receive if they didn't stay Mormon.

Sunnybeach7 - the real scary part is that people buy this public facade
This man represents an organization that has enough wealth that it could literally cure world hunger yet they remain on a perpetual recruitment drive. Blathering on about fantasy cures for AIDS that involve nothing but abstinence and attempting to blame anyone but themselves for the problems that they are causing in the third world by proliferating superstitious nonsense amongst ignorant peoples.

What really gets me is the fact that he's saying to just ignore the facts that are right in front of your face and cater to delusion.

TVBlogger -- my feelings of intense anger left me years ago as well
For the longest time I couldn't get over what a bunch of lying hypocrites religious people where. How they coerced members of their community to all fall into line, or how the most vocal amongst them where quite often the most insidious. I often wonder if the contagious "group think" that is organized religion did not exist, with it's ostracism for those declaring non belief, just how many of those proclaiming belief would still maintain their claims? ...

Jumping in
Yeah, I remember having a sense of anger and betrayal.  I was very hostile towards the church for a few years which is tough when your family is religious and your brother and uncle are pastors.  I still have moments of anger but for the most part, I'm now working on healing and losing the anger... accepting that many mean well, but are just misled.  It's not easy when you feel you've been lied to and used for someone elses' purposes.

SuccessWarrior -- after a sense of betrayal comes extremely angry
That is the trickiest stage of purging one's thought processes to deal with. Festering hatred is non productive. One cannot act as a counterbalance to the religious crazies of this world if they are imbalanced themselves.

The questions that come to my mind after reading this is:

How does it feel to know that the church is looking for naive people to sell its message to?  Were you one of those naive people that was taken advantage of?  How do you feel about that?

My answer...betrayed.

SuccessWarrior - that's the crux of it
Meanwhile these people make constant pleas to the rest of the world for everyone to dumb it down. Painting scientific advancement and the knowledge that it fosters as some kind of evil or common enemy.  The sad reality is that the message of the catholic church and specifically how it pertains to birth control, is the root of the biggest problems that the third world faces.

This reminds me of cigarettes

Tobacco use is on the decline in the U.S. because everyone knows how damaging they are to our health and our health care system so tobacco companies are marketing like madmen to third world countries and it's working.

People in the U.S. are getting too smart to fall for religions that oppose what is becoming common knowledge science so they are taking their message to the third world.

It's a panic move to keep a foothold and keep money coming in.

Sunnybeach7 - it is sad
We are being asked by a lunatic to somehow envy the third world where the influence of his institution is doing irreparable harm.
