I think a lot of it is due to how we really view ourselves. We tend to notice what we focus on unconsciously.
I notice that when I stop finding flaws in others, I can accept myself much more readily.

Hi, Symphony,
I've had these same thoughts and questions, sometimes. I guess people just offer opinions because we think we're being helpful, profound or enlightening. Sometimes, it helps. Other times, it backfires and hurts someone's feelings. That's when it's bad to offer one's opinion so much. Thanks. :)

Readers offer opinions because we're supposed to comment on something? Lol.

Symphony, good questions,
My boyfriend and I talk about the "lobster pot syndrome" all the time, that some (not all, but a few) people are like lobsters in a boiling pot. As soon as they see someone trying to climb out of the pot, and get ahead a little, they want to latch onto them and bring them back into the pot. As opposed to climbing out themselves. Not all people are like that, of course, but it's been our experience enough when we were tryingn to get our lives together, that people around us, who knew we had as little as they, would get very upset, if someone who had almost nothing, had even so much as a slice of pizza that they felt they were entitled or owed, not thinking about how that person would eat, if they gave away their own food.
So, it's all about who you surround yourself with, I guess. And, we've lost friends since we climbed out of the pot, it seemed like people who we thought would really like to see us do well, get a new place, have a good relationship (with each other), and for him to get really good job, and start to make good money selling furniture, suddenly don't come around anymore, after they were very supportive and commisserating during the hard times. It is very strange.

Hey this is gr8. I recently blogged about a 'positive mental attitude' as the foundation of success. Be Positive! and stay the course; as for the crowd just give them the Dixie word "Not Ready to Make Nice"!

Now... Symph... you could have done better than that?.... Ha Ha.. don't worry .. I am only joking. A good post to think about. These questions does make you think and you realise how strange we humans really are, because everybody just seem to pay attention to negative comments. But I suppose that is how we are, we always want to better ourselves and don't want to hear negative things about ourselves.

Good questions. And sometimes when you are sad and self conscious, people still want to take you down a peg or two. That's the part I don't understand.
