Schatz, my friend, you've hit the nail on the head here.
No, we shouldn't coddle our kids and shelter them from harms way. But, we should teach them how to be safe, recognize danger and educate them as to what to do in such instances.

True. The media is feeding a lot of fear into our minds.
However, ultimately, I believe it is the corruption of the society. Why do we live in a society in which we have to fear for our own lives just by walking down the streets? Anyway, this issue is so multi-layered, I can't even name a third of them. But, the root of our society has definitely gone wrong. I agree with you about teaching your child self protection instead of staying at home. Fear is not the solution. Good post!

RIGHT?! All we talk about is war and gasoline prices. Never about the whole planet, always about us or them. Urrrggghhhhh, it makes me so mad.

I can understand both sides...
That's why God put you two together...one of you views the world one way and the other has a totally different outlook. That way, your kids get the benefit of both world views. They can learn from both mom and dad.
Also, you equal each other out. You balance each other's views...right???
The most crucial threat to our survival as a race of beings is the fact that the Permafrost in Alaska and the Swiss Alps and probably other cold places (i only have news articles about the alps and alaska) is melting. When the permafrost melts, it lets the snow go, causing avalanches, etc.
But the most dangerous aspect is that when the permafrost melts it makes methane gas which is 10 times more deadly than carbon monoxide.
