I never really thought of that. I guess things would be much easier to pick up on while you're learning.  I guess at least in the beginning where you're still unsure, and are watching the person for indication of what they are saying.  That's very interesting.

There is a lot of hints in body language and eye contact and such that can be a givaway.

That's interesting Dave
I've never heard about the pupil thing.

Sunnybeach7 - one of the advantages of learning a second language
...is that as the individual is struggling to understand the meanings of the words, perception is heightened in other areas. Without realizing it a person can become a student of body language and a pretty good judge of facial expressions as well as other indicative nuances. I've found that this developed sense never leaves an individual, is enhanced by life experience and is transposed to a certain extent to medium other than direct face to face vocal communication. Yeah, I can tell when someone is lying, unless they are real good at it.

If it is a really tall story
yes I can tell.

posted by Tanga on September 7, 2006 at 12:34 PM | link to this | reply

Yes, Sunny, it's all in the eyes. Teachers watch them. Pupils don't know
about their pupils. And even if you do know, it's hard to control.

Rumored
Yes, eye contact does play a major part in whether one is lying or not.

posted by Afzal_Sunny7 on September 7, 2006 at 11:21 AM | link to this | reply

face to face, yes, I can usually tell, and sometimes over the phone...
body language usually tells all (eye contact being most important), and even voice inflection....

That's the reason people lie...what other reason would there be?

posted by Afzal_Sunny7 on September 7, 2006 at 10:40 AM | link to this | reply

and its even getting worse that people lie for their benefit

Everyone should be honest, but they are not. If I couldn't tell instinctively if someone is lying to me, I would likely be taken in by lies a lot more than not.

lied to
not I am too gullible not to believe them  because I expect people to be like me , there is no way I can lie to anyone

Yes, that can be bad...there are so many liars in this world.

Yes, a lot can be read by facial expressions and body language.
I also get inner feelings that I pick up on.

So many situational factors make answering this question hard, if not impossible. Those I'm closest to, I can tell, but these people rarely lie to me because they don't have to.
