Go figure

Dear J.:

I think I know what's going on here, but it's hardly original wisdom.

Newsweek's Fareed Zacharia posited, back after 9/11, that the real problem is that Islamic civilizations, which challenged (and usually beat) Europeans during the Dark Ages wonder what the heck happened to put them where they are today.

During the Golden Age of Islam 700 years ago, our Arab and Persian cousins were the equals of and/or superiors to all of Europe. They got all the way to the gates of Vienna, took over the Iberian peninsula, had better medicine, astronomy and math, plus superior civil administration (that's how the Ottoman Turks stayed in power as long as they did; they knew how to run a conquired nation better than it had ever been run before) and so on. We got our Arabic number system, far superior to what the Romans left us with, from those great civilizations.

So their theory is, there had to be some sort of massive conspiracy for these great nations to become, by the 18th century, vassal states and colonies of those they had formerly met and bested in so many ways.

Add to that the stagnation of Islamic nations which followed the Golden Age, and you've got a classic case of an entire people screwing the pooch then looking around for someone else to blame (see Hitler's Germany, Stalin's U.S.S.R., Kim's Korea, Castro's Cuba, etc.). Since we're the Big Dogs on the Block, we present an irresistable target.

Everybody hates a winner, just ask the Jews if you don't believe me ...

I'm agnostic on getting out of the UN. George Washington warned us about the perfidy and folly of foreign entanglements, and was certainly right in the 18th century. I'm not sure that wisdom holds today, but it's true that the UN is primarily a Dictators' Club where any free-thinking nation is bound to be gang-banged whenever an important vote comes up.

but don't you know that these countries (and many more) are entitled to Foreign Aid? That it's their God-given (or Allah-given, as the case may be) RIGHT? At least that's what they tell you...
