Devastating is a relative term. It's hard to define such a thing. I usually get hit hard, then I get over it. I've noticed others act as if nothing has happened, then go into months of depression.

It depends
My grandfather passed five years ago and it still hurts like hell. Other things sometimes have a faster recovery.
