TVBlogger - This part cracked me up
"......would be at his best the day you married them and then would slowly deteriorate into a neanderthal..."......Aside from the pastor in question, don't all mother in laws think this way as well?
but seriously....I have heard this type of thing from the pulpit myself over the years. I can see where some people have trouble overcoming this misconception. As a matter of fact, if it were not for hearing this notion continuously proliferated, (most times with me as the subject) I would never have examined this idea more closely. It is an idea that is full of holes, kept alive in the face of reality and is so blatantly self serving for anyone expounding this notion.

Lies
I was heavily involved in an evangelical church in Hawaii and remember the pastor telling us from the pulpit that in choosing a mate, we had better choose a Christian. Why? Because only a Christian spouse would be continuely improving their character. A non-Christian would be at his best the day you married them and then would slowly deteriorate into a neanderthal... okay, that's my exaggeration there. Anyway, with that sort of thing being preached, the attitudes you describe aren't hard to understand.
