Be Thankful It Is Behind You
One form is just as severe as another, and the mental abuse can easily lead to an irrational physical reaction when the abused is backed into a corner of helplessness. Although the mental abuse is maliciously painful and cruel, you can be thankful at least you weren't kicked, punched and thrown around to go with it. Self respect is always a missing element in abusive situations. If the relationship has concluded you are far from being stupid!Even though the scars can run deep, just let them be reminders that you will never allow anyone to take you back to that ugly place again. There is too much beauty in life to waste energy and breath on the ugliness if we don't have to.

only when they're after my chocolate/smokes/whatever.

hehe

Seriously though, there's never a good reason for abuse, and I don't think one is any worse than another.  Scars are scars, whether internal or external.

Hit only in defense, if you have to.
I don't think it's ever necessary to demean anyone by verbally abusing them - including being passive aggressive.
