I have come across ex school mates, and I could track them most of them down without too much trouble, French society is not so mobile and people tend to gravitate in the same area all the time. Plus it is a much smaller country anyway. I don't wish to meet anyone from my past right now, having to explain my sorry life. No thank you.

I chose to tear "uproot" once, but mine roots are firmly planted in French
soil. It might be hard for you to imagine, my parents have lived in the same area all of their lives, and my brothers and sisters (all 6 of them) and my relatives have lived in the same vicinity all their lives too. I am the only "tearaway" who cut off all ties and set sails to New Zealand. Now, I have grown new shoots here, tender and green but still shallow. I feel cut off to a degree, but it was by choice, when I go back it feels strange, it is not quite home any more. You are strong, stay in the eye of the storm.

Jen--- I identified with your comment about never going to a class reunion.
I went to 8 different schools and 3 different high schools. Based on your introspective writing, you seem strong enough now to not bend under the mighty wind that is your mother.
