I lost my last grandmother when I was in my 30s

My children have had a very different experience.  My daughter, 22, just lost her first great grandfather.  It has been such an incredible thing to have great grandparents, in my opinion...for them and for me.

My ex (married for 21+ years)  and I lived next door to his grandparents for 15 years.  I loved hanging out with his grandmother.  She was tough, and she was what would  have been known in the '30s as "a dish."  Seriously, I would go to the theater with her, travel with her.  I even borrowed one of her dresses ones.  She's 90+ years old, and still a knock out, in my opinion.

We don't always agree, but I'm a journalist, and I think the best learning we do is through people who are different than ourselves.

This set of grandparents owned the most modern dairy farm on the eastern seaboard.  Dignitaries came from China, Russia, etc. just to see it.  How cool is that?  When my son (now 17) had to do a school report on who his hero was, he'd pick Popa...doing an interview with him and everything.  I know Pop got the biggest kick out of, and my son got such a respect for hard work and the people who came before him in the family.  In running the farm, they didn't take a single vacation until they were 69 years old!!!  They are millionaires now, and they're exactly the right kind of model  of "how to" in terms of business and life.

As proud as you are of your grandchildren and great grandchildren, I'm sure they speak the same of you.   I hope they let you know on a regular basis how special you are to them.  We should all tell people those sorts of things, I think.   Too many people assume we know how much we're loved and admired.  It's great to get that from the outside world, but as my son would write on his great grandfather, I knew it was something he would love to know.

Kim

PS  Thanks for making me relive some great thoughts of some great times with them.
