I suspect you are right. I can only speak from an observer's point of view because in truth while I live so much of it, I was not there and I doubt I will ever comprehend what they went through.
For me, I am working on some ideas that hopefully will help at least a few.

Bel, I think if more people were aware, and soldiers felt connected, maybe
there need to be more blogs specific to that.

Until someone addresses that these troops are sent home to deal with all the pain, terror and just plain messed up world with some level of support outside of their own family members who are also trying to find their own way these problems will continue. I refuse to sit back and allow this to continue without doing something about it.
Thank You.

There really aren't any good answers yet. But I intend to create some myself over the next couple of years.

The best way I know how to decribe it is surreal. I love him to the point of distraction but there are moments when I know exactly how he will respond to something only to have him do the polar opposite, it's kind of odd.

I am really proud of all you young women who are aware and are working to support a change for them. Some of the wives got back really broken dangerous husbands. In North Carolina there were three homicides in a couple of weeks two or three years ago from recently returned men who lost it for some reason. Nobody in the country deserves support, care and honor more than our military. All of us will help you if you let us know how we can help you in your quest Bel. God bless.

Bel, you and Mr. H have a lot of wisdom about seeing the whole picture
I don't know what the answer is, to getting more understanding, more compassion, and awareness for the problems that soldiers face dealing with coming home from a war zone. I can only guess. M seems to be okay, he had his experiences in Granada and around the world, but nothing like Iraq or Vietnam.
The fact that Carl is doing so well has to have a lot to do with you, your support and honesty. I'm not sure what the answer is: more awareness from the military, more awareness and understanding and support from the civilian population in general.
I know that a lot of people that have mixed feelings and doubts about the war, still have a lot of empathy and support for the soldiers, maybe even more so, because to fight a war that everyone believes in like World War II, made it easier on the soldiers coming home. Vietnam was harder to come back from because of the lack of support at home, and the mistaken idea that the soldiers were responsible for that. It's not them, they are as much victims of war as the civilians, somehow more, because like you said about Carl, he lost his innocence and trust in humanity and that's a terrible thing to lose, especially for someone very young.

it must be a very shocking thing to stand there, waiting for your loved one
to get off the plane and return to your arms, seeing in your head the person you said goodye to but seeing with your eyes that the person coming back has become a different person. that you and carl are able to see and deal with this is a testament to your union and struggles aside, i'm very happy for you.
