Lustorlove,
Personally, I think it's a variety of things, but mostly it's about expectations. I think people our parents generation or older were considered with survival, which was harder. They were more concerned with staying alive, keeping a roof over their and their kids heads, and less concerned with "personal fulfillment". People were probably just as selfish overall, but just more realistic. It wasn't acceptable.
But I think that in terms of expectations people overall have unrealistic expectations about what marriage or their spouse will do for them.
Actually more people probably stayed together in marriages that were miserable, too, that might have split up if the woman had the job or opportunity to leave. People live longer now, so the idea of "til death do us part" means a lot longer. Like I said, a combination. Mysel, I am finally ready to get married and settle down but it took a while.

I really enjoy my freedom!
I don't want to have to worry about someone else all of the time...I already do that with my own mom..

I don't have an opinion, but I don't want any part of the whole marriage
deal, no way!
