Azur
It sounds to me as if you made a good decision.

You were right to turn down the job
working for a cheap "mother" would offer a lousy payoff in any way that counts. Besides, if he goes on the cheap with canned, rehashed stuff, his venture will fail and his writers will never collect even the tiny dollars he offered.

Integrity is the definition of your work and inevitably that'll stand for
itself.

The bull's-eye for nacent writers is this:
The word rate was low by professional standards but they guy told me the work would be regular. I told him that other regular outlets pay more and that if I was busy writing for him that I would not have time to write for them.
How many of us would perhaps get a better start if they wrote this down?
Reminds me of "We lose a little on every sale, but we make up for it in volume".

Yes, there's nothing worse than selling one's talent for less than it's worth. Sometimes I repaired printing equipment with only the thought of feeding the children in my head and some clients played with that.

Azur, At least you know what you are comfortable with or not, and you are not afraid to speak your mind. Some people are to wishy-washy to stand up for themselves.

You're right. Gluesticks are messy. Guard your reputation for quality work.

Azur,
I admire your high standards, for what it's worth. Thanks. I believe you set a fine example. :)

azur--
the sad thing is that there will be hundreds if not thousands of people willing to take the cut-and-paste cheap work. In the end, this kind of work is detrimental to everyone who is or aspires to be a writer.

I'm sorry this wasn't challenging enough for you. Perhaps next time.

Azur, it sounds like you did right to make that call,
If you're not comfortable with the standards of the magazine, then it will weigh on you. Amazing that even an editor doesn't value good writing. Three 2,000 word pieces on a subject that you don't even find interesting would be a hard job.
