bel,
Now that's love. What wonderful examples. Your love for your grandpa, Carl's love for you, your grandpa's love of his plants, and your wanting to preserve that special memory. It's great. Thanks. :)

The lilac will grow for a couple more years,
based on the photo, before it will spend its energy on blooms. And if you have to move again, you can take another shoot from it. Meanwhile, maybe you can find a lilac-scented candle to remind you of your grandfather. Taking cuttings from trees at home and transplanting them to the new place, especially in pioneer days, was part of the tradition. Well-written story. I can see why you cherish Carl.:)

I still think it needs better soil or fertilizing.
Sometimes plants (animals, babies, all kinds of stuff really) speak to me. These plants are saying that they're getting too much sunlight and that they need fertilizing.....Fish Emulsion is what they'd prefer.

Taps
The orginal bush that it came from is older than my mother, so I suspect it's the old fashioned kind. Thanks!

Bel, If it is the old fashioned kind, it will have its first flower cluster when it is seven years old. After that it will have more and more each year. The newer types mature faster.

Passion
I have 3 others along same line there. It was literally a twig when Carl brought it home. They take a few years to get big enough for flowers.

If it's still struggling after all this time.
Perhaps you have it in the wrong soil or light. Maybe it needs fertilizing.
