Maybe we should pass a law so that only catholic cops
can arrest catholics and jewish cops can arrest jews. That would put an end to this sort of thing.
"Sir, I'm thinking about arresting you for DUI. What is your religious affiliation?"
"I'm a servant of Ra."
"Okay sir, we don't have any Egyptian cops who worship the old gods on duty so you are free to go. Please don't do it again."

To me the DUI is the dumber of the two aspects
It's no secret to anyone that religious people hate each other. Why does this come as some of shock just because Mel said something while intoxicated because he was pissed that he got caught? Do you know how many drunks say things out of anger to cops that are arresting them? In this case, he's famous and has lately become famous for his proselytizing. Too bad for him. It would have never happened if he wasn't driving under the influence.
In the U.S., DUI is a criminal offense as well. First offense is usually the loss of a license for a few months, a couple grand in fines and surcharges, alcohol counseling, a couple of days of jail or community service. Each offense after that is supposed to get worse.

SuccessWarrior - the DUI part of this story is being overshadowed by the
man's behaviour.
...but that is the real story. There are still people living with the primitive "DUI is okay if I'm the one doing it" mentality. I'm not sure of the laws in the state of California but here in Canada, DUI is a criminal code offence with a mandatory one year license suspension and a number of other possible penalties including: fines and even jail time, all left to the judge's discretion. Second offence is mandatory 1 year in jail.
